Carpet Types

Berber Pile

Berber Pile
Berber carpet derives its name from a handmade, wool carpet made by the Berber tribes of North Africa, using the undyed wool off local sheep. The name Berber is given to carpet that has the off-white heathered look of cloaks which are used by these North African tribes.

These carpets use flecked yarns most often in loop styles. The carpet can consist of large loops or small loops depending on the style. Patterned Berbers are made with multi-level loops; some styles are also available in pastels and dark tones as well as naturals.

Berber is also available in twist pile yarn as well as loop pile. Berber carpet hides footprints and vacuum tracks. Berber carpet is made with wool fibres or a wool/polypropylene mix or even just polypropylene fibre.

Frieze Pile

Frieze Pile
Characterised by a long-cut pile that lies in different directions, providing a deep texture and shaggy appearance. The quality of frieze carpets has improved with better yarns and more varied constructions, such as mixing thick and thin as well as long and short yarns. This carpet style is extremely durable and provides a sensual and luxurious feel.

Level Loop Pile

Level Loop Pile
As the name suggests, where the carpet pile forms a loop. The yarn is threaded through the backing then sewn back through – creating a loop of yarn. There are several types of loop pile carpets. The more common ones are level loops, sisals, textured loops and multi-level loops. Each creates a very distinct look in the home. Loop pile carpets are hard wearing, durable and do not have a tendency to show tracking (footprints) as often as other carpet types.

Multi Level Loop Pile

Multi Level Loop Pile
Made using loops of various heights, giving a textured finish to the surface of the carpet. Multi level loop pile carpets are exceptionally durable.

Saxony Pile

Saxony Pile
This cut pile carpet is made from straight, untwisted yarn. This dense, cut pile carpet is manufactured with the yarn tufts packed closely together to form a smooth surface. Saxony carpets will show all footprints and vacuum marks.

Shag Pile

Shag Pile
Constructed with long cut pile tufts that lie in different directions, providing a deep texture and shaggy appearance. This carpet style provides a sensual and luxurious feel.

Tip Sheared Pile

Tip Sheared Pile
Tip sheared carpet offers the visual appeal of both texture and pattern. Many of these styles of tip sheared carpet are on the cutting edge of fashion today. Tip sheared carpet is created by tufting some loops higher than others. When the carpet is sheared, the higher loop tufts are cut, but the lowers ones are not. The resulting cut pile tufts look darker than the loops, creating a pattern.

Tip sheared carpet in a cut and loop pile design combines cut and looped fibers. It provides a variety of surface textures or sculptured effects. Cut and loop pile carpets are available in solid or multiple colors. The different levels in this type of carpet can hide dirt and footprints.

Twist Pile

Twist Pile
The yarn is twisted during the manufacture of this type of carpet. Its durability is achieved with factors including the type of density of tufts and the amount of twist in the yarn. A “tight” twist enhances a carpet’s long-term durability by providing improved resistance to crushing and matting.

Twist pile carpets that generally contain 80% wool are given a pile weight. This refers to the quantity of wool per square yard. E.G 40 = 40 ounces of wool per square yard.

The heavier the pile weight the denser the pile and the better the quality. This type of carpet hides footprints and vacuum tracks.

Velvet / Plush Pile

Velvet/Plush Pile
This type of carpet is made from straight, untwisted yarn and is constructed with a shorter length fibre than Saxony. During Manufacture, the fibre ends are cut to the same lengths to produce a smooth, level surface. This luxurious carpet is suited for formal settings, but will show footprints and vacuum marks.
